The Motto

Brief encounter I had with the groom at a wedding.

It’s towards the end of the reception and I am standing near the dance floor. A few people are dancing but it’s not too wild. The music is pretty loud so having a conversation is near impossible, but I do see people yelling their conversations at one another.

The groom comes up to me and yells in my ear:

“Do you know the song “The Motto” by Drake?”

I shake my head in the negative.

“The song will come on next and I will sing all the lyrics.”

That was all he said to me. He then joined his friends back on the dance floor. I stood there wondering what I should do. The song came on and everyone yelled (like they do for most songs that come on during the reception) and sure enough, he started lipsyncing the song. It was pretty crowded so I didn’t have a good angle to film him so I kind of just watched. Did he want me to film him singing or was he just was letting me know that he was going to lipsync the next song? Most people were singing it. But filming someone lipsync a song is not entertaining to watch especially if it’s dark and you will not know what song the person is singing in the final highlight video.

I know of Drake but I do not listen to any of his music. On the following Monday, I decided to look up the song on Spotify. I like the song. I added it to one of my playlists with all my other rap tunes (108 songs on the playlist as of this writing - mainly French rap songs). I then looked up to see when the song came out and it was released way back in 2011. I was kind of surprised it was ten years old. It has over 330 million listens on Spotify so clearly it is a popular track. I thought about this and wondered what other songs I am missing out on.
