The Expense Report Suite: Prelude / Pt. I

Do you remember when you first:
heard Pet Sounds
watched Goodfellas
ate a boudin ball
saw Stephen Meaux’s Expense Report

All monumental moments. But not all equal. Goodfellas is good, but doesn’t hold up to the joy of a boudin ball. No time for Pet Sounds. But plenty for SMER. The report tracks Stephen Meaux’s expenses for the month of January but then in a post-modern sort of way, turns a monthly budget into an art piece. There are photos on top of photos and shapes on top of shapes.

“I’ve tracked my expenses for years. Month after month. And I thought why not do something with this. Pollock had paint. Hendrix had sound. Seinfeld had a show. I have spreadsheets.” says Meaux.

The earliest spreadsheet dates back to 2019. But until now, the world had seen none of them.

There is no denying Meaux is breaking new ground. Great work always has imitators, critics, pushback. None of that matters. What matters is how it makes you feel. Take it in. Tell everyone. We all want a ticket to the show. Row Jimmy row. Where will Meaux spend his next dollar bill? God Only Knows.
